Drill 6 of 40

Beginner

Change-of-Pace Dribbling

Purpose

Disrupt the defender's timing by varying speed. Change-of-pace is what turns a good handle into a game-effective handle.

How to Perform

Dribble at full speed, then decelerate to a slow walk while staying low, then explode back to full speed. Repeat the slow-fast-slow rhythm down the court.

Key Coaching Points

  • Make the change obvious — exaggerate the slow
  • Stay low even when slow
  • Explode hard on the acceleration
  • Keep eyes up to read the defense

Common Mistakes

  • No real speed change
  • Standing tall when slowing down
  • Weak acceleration
  • Looking at the ball

Recommended Reps

Full-court trips, 5 slow-fast cycles per trip. 5 trips.

How to Progress

Add a crossover at the acceleration point, then add a defender, then read the defender's reaction to choose the move.
