Beginner

First-Step Development

Purpose

The first step beats the defender. A quick, direct first step creates the advantage that drives the whole possession.

How to Perform

From triple-threat, plant your pivot foot and push off explosively past the defender's hip. Keep low and direct — no wasted motion. Sprint the first two steps.

Key Coaching Points

  • Push off the pivot foot hard
  • Stay low and direct
  • First two steps are a sprint
  • Keep the ball tight and protected

Common Mistakes

  • Standing up on the drive
  • Moving laterally instead of straight
  • Pushing the ball out in front
  • No explosion off the pivot

Recommended Reps

15 reps per side. 3 sets.

How to Progress

Add a defender, then a cone to beat, then finish at the rim after the first step.
