Jump Stops

Purpose

Stop under control, protect the ball, and create passing and shooting options. The jump stop is the foundation of finishing and pivoting.

How to Perform

On the approach, jump and land on both feet simultaneously, knees bent, ball secured with two hands. Establish balance before your next move.

Key Coaching Points

  • Land both feet at the same time
  • Knees bent, balanced
  • Secure the ball with two hands
  • Be ready to pass, shoot, or pivot

Common Mistakes

  • Landing one foot first (travel)
  • Landing upright
  • Bringing the ball low and loose
  • No balance after the stop

Recommended Reps

15 reps from a dribble approach. 3 sets.

How to Progress

Add a pivot after the stop, then a pass, then a finish after the stop.
