Layup Footwork

Purpose

Finish consistently at the rim. Proper layup footwork is the difference between made baskets and missed opportunities.

How to Perform

On a right-hand layup, step right-left-jump. On a left-hand layup, step left-right-jump. Jump off the opposite foot and shoot with the inside hand. Practice both sides.

Key Coaching Points

  • Step-jump rhythm: opposite foot plants last
  • Jump straight up, not into the rim
  • Shoot with the inside hand
  • Eyes on the target, soft touch

Common Mistakes

  • Wrong foot on the jump
  • Jumping into the defender
  • Shooting with the outside hand

Recommended Reps

10 layups per side. 3 sets.

How to Progress

Add speed, then a defender, then off-hand layups, then reverse layups.
