Drill 3 of 40

Beginner

Crossovers

Purpose

Change direction quickly and keep the defender off balance. The crossover is the most used move in basketball — master the mechanics first.

How to Perform

Pound the ball low, then push it across your body from one hand to the other below knee height. Drop your shoulder slightly in the direction of the first dribble to set up the move, then explode the opposite way.

Key Coaching Points

  • Keep the crossover low and tight
  • Sell the move with a shoulder fake
  • Explode out of the crossover, don't drift
  • Eyes stay forward

Common Mistakes

  • Crossover too high (easy to steal)
  • Wide, loose crossover
  • No shoulder sell
  • No explosion after the move

Recommended Reps

20 crossovers per side. 3 sets.

How to Progress

Add a continuous crossover rhythm, then a double crossover, then combine with a between-the-legs. Finally, perform at full speed down the court.
