Beginner

Stationary Ball Control

Purpose

Develop a feel for the basketball and build the wrist, finger, and forearm strength that controls every dribble. Before you move, you must own the ball in place.

How to Perform

Stand in an athletic stance with knees bent, eyes up. Move the ball around your waist, knees, and head in circles. Then pound the ball low, waist-high, and high with each hand. Finish with fingertip taps and ball slaps to build grip strength.

Key Coaching Points

  • Keep eyes up — never watch the ball
  • Use fingertips, not palms
  • Pound the ball; don't pat it softly
  • Stay low and balanced in your stance

Common Mistakes

  • Looking down at the ball
  • Dribbling with the palm
  • Standing too tall
  • Slapping instead of pounding with force

Recommended Reps

3 rounds of 30 seconds per hand. Daily.

How to Progress

Increase speed and force each week. Add a tennis ball in the off-hand to toss and catch while dribbling, forcing eyes up and total ball control.
